2nd Grade Homework

There is homework every night in second grade. The children are expected to read, read, read! Each night they will bring home a reading bag which holds a book and a reading log. Parents, you are requested to set aside a minimum of 15 minutes (more is even better) each night for your child to read. Students may choose to read a book from our classroom library or one from home.

Nightly Reading Logs should be properly filled out and must be signed by a parent each night. Reading logs and books are to be returned to school each day. This home component of our reading program plays a vital part in your child's reading success. ( Find out why! ) Students will be graphing their reading minutes each week.

Second grade reading logs also include a short summary of what was read.  The summary should include a minimum of 3 sentences that tells the beginning, middle and end of any fiction story. Tell at least three facts about any non-fiction book.   If your child reads more than one book, then pick one of the books for the summary.

Our Everyday Math program includes a homework page for each lesson. The lessons are explained on each page and on the chapter introductory pages. The math homework sheets should be returned the next day. Check out Math Sites for Extra Practice to help enhance skills.

Spelling homework involves nothing more than studying the weekly spelling words. Look for a Spelling Newsletter to come home each week with ideas for practicing.
